Marin posted: "...This has come up before on this list and I seem to recall
that this requirement applies to boats being operated commercially, not basic
recreational boats..."
Comment: That's what I thought, too!! Boats with paying passengers. But that
hasn't been referenced yet anywhere...now I wonder.
Note that the West Marine advisor says "...filters installed within the engine
space must be
able to pass a two and one-half minute heat test as defined by ANSI/UL 1105.
Unfortunately, Gasoline and diesel filters that meet this requirement are
generally equipped with a metal bowl..."
So this doesn't sound like an absolute condemnation. So maybe "plastic" bowls
pass the text???
Also, Ron posted "..Resist the temptation to buy the slightly less expensive
automotive FG-series filter. This version lacks the brass drain valve and heat
shield and is equipped with an amber-tinted, UV-resistant sight bowl..."
(recommending the MA-series).
Well that's an eye opener! When I upgraded filter bowls about five years ago
and got ones with a sensor probe hole to detect water, I received amber
colored bowls...from a marine supply house! Do these have the sdame fire
rating as clear???
I also ordered plastic drains, supposedly "marine", because my old brass ones
were very hard to turn. These have no option for a drain plug, but a hose
could be attached and then plugged....not likely very fireproof.
Either I'm getting older or life is getting more complicated,
