I have nothing against the Mac. My first real commercial product
(MedVision) was for the Mac only (1990). It was 2 million lines of source
code and took 2 years to write and 8 years to complete. My wife worked for
Apple and was the Federal Account Manager for HHS and especially the NIH in
Bethesda. There was a time when I owned 20 Mac's. People said that I "bled
in 7 colors" - an Apple-inside joke. I've met and talked to Jobs and
Sculley.

It's just a matter of time before Mac software/OS's require network
validation too. It's the only way that real validation can be done because
it hides the controls behind the network server at the host site. So Mac,
Windows, Linux, whatever...the day is coming when you'll need to be
"connected."

So is switching computers and software the right fix for this new validation
scheme? Isn't it much better to figure out a way to get your boat connected
to the internet? Yes, there are some issues and there are places where it
is harder to make it happen than others. Today. But mostly...yesterday.

Remember that it wasn't that long ago when a valid GPS fix was only possible
for a few hours a day. Now we all rely on that GPS fix. It won't be much
longer before someone will write, "remember that it wasn't that long ago
when our boats weren't always connected to the network..."
