The alternator supplier evidently doesn't know about the various
alterantives available on the market.
There are at least five different suppliers of equipment that will do
exactly what your friend  wants.

However it does requires a bit of change to the original wiring.

What puzzles me more is why the old Perkins alternators seem to do the job
but the new units can't keep up.

The setup your friend wants is already done on hundred if not thousands of
cruising boats without problems.
