That's correct ....and likely the source of the recommendation  from Detroit
which I posted:

"...Experience clearly indicates multigrade oils are NOT comparable to
(straight weight) lubricants...."

In addition, Detroit Diesel also recommended straight 30 weight oils for a
period...(during 1968 for example)...then reverted back to 40 weight
oils....likely based on actual operating results...which must have been
undesireable...

That's why, as Mike posted, it is critical to follow YOUR engine
manufacturer's recommendations on coolants, lubricating oils, and even fuel.

Please don't interpret my posts (regarding two cycle Detroit Diesels) to imply
anything whatsoever about other engine manufacturer recommendations. The five
gallon Mobil oil pails I now use continue to state the approved engine
applications on the container which include "Detroit Diesel"....but most
engines brands are NOT listed.
