T&T: Converting my Running/Anchor Lights to LED...can it be done cheaply?

Having looked at the options for replacement of my running and anchor lights
with off the shelf LED fixtures (costly, my perspective) to get a good lumen
output at low amps, I am wondering if it might make sense to try to retrofit
LED bulbs into my existing various housings. Anyone done this? Where would I
get the bulbs and how are they rated for comparable brightness.
I have found clusters at my motorcycle dealer for around $12 for a group of 6
lamps to be used as license plate lights, but don't know what the output is.
I would like to have a 25 watt equivalent or better.
I have noticed that my local Ace Hardware has strings of 110v bulb sets (xmas)
for a price that even I would not flinch at. Would these work at 12v? How
about filling up the light cavity with a bunch of these things?? They don't
put out heat, so what would happen?
Maybe this just another WAKO idea, but we could really raise hell with West
Marine's business plan if we can work this out!
Thanks, Tom
