This is why I have a water flow sensor / alarm on my incoming cooling water 
AND an exhaust elbow temperature monitor / alarm. Either one will give me an 
early alarm, and the don't depend on the actual engine temp. alarm. These 
can clue you in to what's going on down there and what action to take.
