I believe that the GPS knows where it is, but the chart makers don't know where the Erie canal is. The charts that the chips have made from were made in the 40's to the 60's. When new charts are made, the GPS will place you in the canal. Another reason not to trust blindly your display and use your Mark1 EYEball.
