T&T: Articulated rudder

 >shipbuilders usually weld a vertical piece of  structural angle to  
each side of the
trailing edge of the rudder.

A disadvantage of this method is that it will cause drag when the  
rudder is centered, where the articulated rudder will not.  The  
amount of drag from the structural angle may be negligible in the  
overall scope of things, or it may not.  Or perhaps the cost of the  
drag will eventually be repaid by the fact it has no moving parts and  
so never needs maintenance :-)
