We purchased our Atlantic 30 trawler last summer. It has a single screw with
a 165 horsepower volvo diesel. We cruise primarily in Buzzards Bay
(Massachusetts), which is known for strong winds (15 to 20 knots) and
following seas. Last summer we had to replace the hynautics steering pump on
the uuper helm station. This summer the Cetrek autopilot was fixed. Despite
this, we are have a difficult time steering a straight course, especially in
following seas. It often feels as though there is no helm control. Has
anyone had similar problems and what can be done to correct it? Thinking of
installing a larger rudder with a bottom skeg bearing to give added support
but worried about the steering cylinder size.
