My knowledge of canals in Ireland is spotty, however I did live there in
1997 for 7 weeks splitting time between Dublin and Galway and have taken 3
or 4 one to two week vacations in Ireland.

My favorite way to vacation in Ireland is to (1) drive by car to an
interesting village 30 or 40 miles away, (2) find a pub that will have a
session (music) that evening, (3) find a nearby B&B, (4) go to the pub to
eat, drink Guinness and swap stories with the locals, (5) sleep and eat
breakfast at the B&B, and (6) repeat steps 1 thru 5.

Doing this by canal boat could be just as much fun.

In my travels by car I did come across the Grand Canal and River Shannon,
examined some dockage and met some Germans that were renting a boat. I wish
I had some recommendations, other than DO IT!
