T&T: Air Conditioners

Ken,
My opinion I'd be shopping for a new unit - what else will go wrong with the
unit if you replace the compressor, condenser, pan rotting out, wiring
frayed?

Fellow boater had a compressor go bad on a 12K split unit, best price was
$800 to replace it. He bought a new unit from http://www.flagshipmarine.com/
, saved additional bucks by recycling the thermostat, starting capacitor,
water pump, and electronics box. He went to a single unit from the split
unit. I saw the unit before he installed it and was very satisfied with the
quality - one thing that I really liked was the evaporator had its own box
built around the bottom to catch the condensation, unlike some units that
let the condensation accumulate in the entire pan (like my cruse-air unit)
and let the bottom of the compressor eventually rot out.

Your mileage could differ.

Subject: T&T: Air Conditioners

Hi All,

Had one of our air conditioners checked today, and was told that it needed a
new compressor. The unit is a Marine Air System MTC-X 1989 vintage. Does
anybody have knowledge of these units? I will be getting a 2nd opinion, but
in the meantime looking for help. If I do have to replace the compressor
would it be advisable to replace new compressor only or should I replace the
entire unit, and if that is so any suggestions as to make & model, and best
place to buy. This is one of three units on board and all are 12,000 btu.
The
other two units work great. Any & all help/suggestions will be much
appreciated.

Thanks

Ken Tucknott
