Here in New Bern, NC; we have an exceptionally competent and honest A/C and
Naiad man. He repairs A/Cs when possible. Aft, I have a 16,000BTU Cruisair
(owned by Dometic which also owns Marine Air) of 1985 vintage. It works fine
but shows signs of rust in many places. Right now it has a very slow leak.
When it fails, he recommends replacement with a new integrated unit in the
saloon instead of a divided unit.
One good reason to replace is that new units have low "in-rush" or power
surge requirements. Also, the new one is likely to be more energy efficient.
Others on the list have replaced their compressors with industry standard
units and not gotten the part from the A/C's manufacturer.
My unit appears clogged up so I am taking a sweat break.

Subject: T&T: Air Conditioners
| Hi All,
|
| Had one of our air conditioners checked today, and was told that it needed
a
| new compressor. The unit is a Marine Air System MTC-X 1989 vintage. Does
| anybody have knowledge of these units? I will be getting a 2nd opinion,
but
| in the meantime looking for help. If I do have to replace the compressor
| would it be advisable to replace new compressor only or should I replace
the
| entire unit, and if that is so any suggestions as to make & model, and
best
| place to buy. This is one of three units on board and all are 12,000 btu.
The
| other two units work great. Any & all help/suggestions will be much
