T&T: Sea strainers

The five Perko strainers currently installed on my Gulfstar 38'
sundeck are located below the waterline...I can gain a lot of
walk-around room in the engine room if I relocate them a bit
higher...Will it matter if they are above waterline a bit??  The pumps
they are connected to should be able to lift water sufficiently...Am I
overlooking something??
