The problems with AIS, as described, are a bit overblown. The user
input information is not the critical part of the information stream and
if it is wrong, it's not big deal, a nuisance perhaps, but that's it.
The percentage of GPS data that is wrong is very low. In any event the
system is targeted at large vessels and professional operators. It is
definitely an improvement even with it's obvious limitations.
The FCC can preclude the AIS transmissions from small craft if necessary
and I suppose they might do so.
