I beg to differ with your dictionary, Bob.
A gypsy is a shortening of the term "gypsy head" and is used only for rope,
not chain. It is aka a warping head or capstan head. Chainwheel and wildcat,
as you say, are correct for the wheels used for chain.
Unfortunately, a lot of books nowadays have inaccurate information - sounds
like the Nautical dictionary is one of them.
Regards,
John

Bob Austin conveyed:
>From the Nautical dictionary:
Gypsy: n. A special wheel on a which shaped to accomodate the links of an
anchor chain;
See: Chainwheel, wildcat.
