>From the Nautical dictionary:

Gypsy: n. A special wheel on a which shaped to accomodate the links of an
anchor chain;
                See: Chainwheel, wildcat.

There is also a Gypsy winch--which refers to any small hand operated winch,
not specifically to one with a chain wheel.

The one to two feet will be sufficient, if you know how to lay the chain into
the slots on the chain wheel. If you just drape the chain over casually, it
may appear to fit, but not. It has to fit down deep into the machined
slots.
