Subject: T&T: Problem with stop engine button with Perkins diesel

About 12 years ago, I along with a bunch of other people, head Marine
Traders equipped with Perkins diesels in the Annapolis area. We all had
that problem and what we learned to do was run sring from the interior helm
station down to the engine where there was a spring loaded part of the
engine to which the string was attached. When the solinoid failed (nearly
all the time) you pulled the string and the engine fuel supply was choked
off.
Dr. Steven Franke
Steven,
A good fix, like Keith's fix for the light bulbs. K, wish I had thought of
that!!!!
Back to the Perkins solenoids. On many of the old 6.354's there is a solenoid
ON the engine that the plunger on shuts off the fuel supply as you well know!
This solenoid can get out of adjustment, that is slightly move so that the
throw does not shut off the fuel. Make certain that it is being energized ,
that is have someone hit the shutdown button while you watch the solenoid. If
it operates but does not shut the eng down then loosen the mounting screws and
adjust it.
 worked for me.
