Joel,
When MORNING STAR was in Clearwater, we used to have the same problem.  I used
to clean our strainer once a week.  I used small 1" pool chlorine tablets, and
placed one in the basket every week.  It seemed to do fine although after only
18 years, my air conditioner finally gave up the ghost this spring!  A friend
use to do a similar routine but he placed the tablet in a 35mm film canister
with holes punched in it, although I'm not sure that there was any benefit.
