T&T: fuel tank sender

I need to replace both of my fuel tank senders & as usual it's turning into a
real struggle.  I can't figure out the ohms & I can't get the first sender out
of the tank.  I have Volvo gauges.  The sender has VDO, 6/24V & Australia
stamped into the coverplate.  No ohm designation on the gauge.  The sender has
a rectangular plastic housing under the cover plate that barely fits through
the hole in the tank.  I can get it out about 3 inches & then it hangs up on
something.  Of course I can only reach it with one hand & can only see into
the tank with a mirror.  Any ideas would be appreciated.
