About 12 years ago, I along with a bunch of other people, head Marine
Traders equipped with Perkins diesels in the Annapolis area. We all had
that problem and what we learned to do was run sring from the interior helm
station down to the engine where there was a spring loaded part of the
engine to which the string was attached. When the solinoid failed (nearly
all the time) you pulled the string and the engine fuel supply was choked
off. When I moved to Marina del Rey, a dock neighbor had the same problem
and I showed him how to use the same solution. I'll bet that at least half
the Perkins-eqipped trawlers in the U.S. do the same thing!
