I can't see the comparison to the portapotty, with the AirHead, you are
dealing with the urine only, not both urine and sewage.
Before we installed the AH, we almost always pumped urine only overboard to
keep from filling the holding tank with water and urine. In fact, so many
years ago, I think that idea came from this list. So, I'm sure that many, if
not the majority of boaters do the same, legal or not. This, I'm sure would
create a problem in the great lakes, but for the most part, not everywhere
else.
The other side of this holding tank to composting toilet comparison is to
deal with the pump out twice a month (minimum) with the holding tank OR go 2
to 3 months in-between recharging the composting head and not having to find
an operating pump out station.

Type I treatment device makes a LOT more sense.<
I can't see the cost of installing a Type 1 is the same price as installing
the AH. The law of averages on the cost of installing complicated systems
(wiring, plumbing, sub panels) is to take the price of the system and double
it to cover the cost of installation. Lots to deal with installing the LS,
very little to install a AH.
Not for everyone, I know - but for myself and others it makes a lot of
sense. No financial upside for me with the AH, BTW.
