Hans,
You may never PLAN to be in the ICW in pixx poor weather but a lot of things could conspire against you and there you are. And now you are there with no experience because you have always avoided it(another link in the chain). Now wouldn't it be nice if you had an extra resource available to help relieve a little anxiety? And don't always think "poor weather" in this scenario. It could be great weather but just after dark on a moonless night. You can actually see the wheelhouse of the tow around the corner, but is he moving? I know it's easy to say "I wouldn't do that" but there may be times when a series of events leads you into an area(geographical, theoretical or otherwise) that you have always said you would avoid....a series of decisions where you chose the safest ones yet still, there you are. Anyway, I would think an extra resource like AIS may prove to be quite valuable in a situation like this.
Trawler on,
John
