'Lo All,
In a cursory look, here is a stainless steel carabiner rated for over
10,000 pounds (doesn't state in specs if this is the ultimate
breaking strength or the safe working load, but at that rating, it
should be sufficient, under any circumstances I would ever want to be
exposed to. It also incorporates a lock, so it could be used
permanently on a line used to hook up to mooring balls and other
things and would not have to be later changed for a more secure
attachment for short stays. It has a 1.36" clearance for chains,
ropes and mooring rings. I would want to securely attach the line,
using tape or something so that it would not accidently fall off.
I have used carabiners that have an eye for attaching the line to
preclude loss of the carabiner by falling off, but not one this large
or strong. They had a simple spring closure that I would not trust in
a blow, so it could only have been used as a temporary hookup to
facilitate attaching a secure line.
Sounds like a good idea! Thanks!
