Michael,
Without benefit of seeing it, I would guess that it was "Red Tide", a
naturally occurring algae bloom. It is no surprise that there are varying
opinions but many folks feel that the problem is exacerbated by pollution.
There was an outbreak in the south, off Ft. Myers/Sanibel early this summer
and it has been slowly creeping north all summer. Unfortunately, this has
become a very common occurrence in Florida waters, at least on the left coast.
It was so bad last summer that my son sold his 25' Grady White fishing boat
and bought a flats boat which is much more portable. He gave up on offshore
fishing and now targets the skinny water and can trailer the boat to where the
Red Tide ain't!
