Ed,
We use DirecTV.
We only have it for the boat.
They don't care that it is on a boat.
Initially they will want a land line phone number but tell then you don't
have one and they will say 'ok'.
You want to distinguish your Billing Address (home) from your Service
Address (boat).
We live on the boat during the summers and have cruised fairly extensively.
I subscribe to their rebroadcast of network stations (called 'Local
Channels' on their site). There use a 'spot' beam to send the signal to a
circle with about a 250 mile radius from the stations. When I go from one
circle to another I call and say "I want to change my Service Address" to
another. We'll often use the address of a marina 200 miles ahead. Don't go
into the business about the boat. They don't care that you are on a boat.
It's not illegal, it just confuses the issue.
When we go back to land in the winter we call and say "I want to suspend my
service". They drop it for 6 months when we pick it up again.
HTH
Ps
DirecTV (I suspect all sat providers) also has something called 'National
Access' which provides the NY and/or LA network feeds. These are broadcast
nationwide. This is the service which is prohibited BY LAW from application
to boats. It is provided to RVs and on-the-road truckers, again by law.
