Dear Ricky,
Many of the same questions that you raise were also ours until Jan. 2006
when we attended TrawlerFest. We also had appointments to see 15 different
kinds of trawlers that week to try to determine the style and size for us.
We had 2 certain requirements--6'4" headroom and a centerline aft queen.
The combination of investigating a variety of boats and attending
Trawlerfest were gold-plated experiences for us, aiding us in the decision
of the trawler that would best suit our needs. Next fall (2007) was "our
scheduled time to buy our boat" with plans to move aboard September 2008,
however, we made our purchase this past June--moving up from a SeaRay 270
Sundancer.
We would encourage you to take advantage of TrawlerFest's
(www.trawlerfest.com) courses and on-site trawlers. That was such a rich
experience for us. Over the past few years we picked the brains of so many
live-aboards but that week was monumental in helping us make our decision.
In deciding the "brand", you'll want to consider the type cruising you
want to do which would cause you to look at the size and weight of the boat.
The lighter weight trawlers would bob around in heavy seas whereas a heavier
trawler would be more steady.
Good luck and have fun as you do your research. When you find what's
right for you, you'll know it right away because she will call your name and
she will quickly become the standard to which you will compare the others.
