We removed the foam-backed upholstry fabric from our '87 NordicTug 32' forward
cabin. Condensation dripping from the uninsulated gunwale chanel had ruined
the fabric over what had probably been years.
We are planning to attach wood strapping with adhesive at appropriate
intervals under the deck and along the hull, apply between the strapping a
couple layers of the thin plastic water-proof insulation used between cement
foundations and wood sills in building construction, and then nail AZEK
beadboard [5" wide strips] across the strapping. If the nails show, we'll
cover them with teak trim strips.
Also plan to have the outboard strip on both sides [that will extend under the
gunwale channels, which will be filled with slightly compressed rolls of the
insulation material] secured with exposed brass screws so that they will be
easy to remove for access to the channels to tighten or re-caulk thru-deck
fittings.
We'll paint the boards. Thanks for the recent post on that.
Does anyone have any comments or suggestions on this plan? If the hull or
deck move or twist a little as the boat moves in a seaway, will be have
problems with this kind of interior paneling? If we go forward - with
whatever advise we are lucky enough to receive - we'll report to the list on
our results.
