T&T: Auxillary drive systems

Hello,
My Cheoy Lee Trawler had an auxillary drive system installed of the
starboard generator when I bought the boat 9 years ago. A hydraulic pump
belt-driven off the front of the Perkins 4-236 20 kw gen-set connected to a
hydraulic motor which, in turn, could be connected by chain to the main
shaft. I tried it out a couple of times & it was gutless to turn the 43" X
34" 4-bladed prop. Maybe, on a good day, it could push the boat 3 at knots.
The original owner had it installed prior to his circumnavigation in the
late 70's. Now, 2 "trips" later I have finally bought a 85hp Isuzu truck
engine & had it marinized. It is stored in the forward "workshop" & will be
installed in Durban when we get there in January. This will be a dedicated
hydraulic power-pak which I hope to never use. But, if we have to, it should
push the boat at 5 knots in a seaway for as long as needed; a thousand hours
or more non-stop. I will also add a 240 volt oil transfer pump & an oil
cooler to cool the Twin Disc Transmission oil. I will "exercise" the engine
once or twice a month.
"Bat" makes a slick looking shaft system but they have quoted more than
US$14,000.00 for their part so I may decide to stay with a mechanical-chain
hookup. I will add more comments when this system is finished; the engine
will be moved into the engine room in Durban & be mounted alongside the
Port 21 KW Isuzu generator. I was told that you can't take enough
horespower off the front end of a generator to be effective in turning the
shaft. And, to drag a 43" prop ( if I were to add a small side propellor)
would be innefective.
