If you are lucky enough to own a recent Apple computer (and some other
brands) you already have this capability without buying any additional equipment.
All Apple IMacs, iBooks, recent Powerbooks and MacBook Pro laptops have built in
ethernet ports and Airport wi-fi. If any one of your computers is hardwired
to a cable or DSL modem (or even to a telephone connection) it can serve as a
wi-fi transceiver and can connect up all your other wi-fi enabled computers in
a network and to the internet. I'm writing this post on an older iBook laptop
while lounging on my livingroom sofa. Its wi-fi output is received by my Intel
IMac in my office 60 feet away. The iMac is connected via ethernet cable to a
cable modem, and thence to the internet. The hookup is automatic and no
additional equipment is needed.
