T&T: Digital photo dates

I am trying to sort into chronological order about 300 digital pictures
taken during our recent Atlantic Loop trip for a slide presentation. Does
any one of you computer gurus know how to change the date the picture was
taken in "properties"? 

Like a clot I missed checking the camera date after changing the batteries
and in consequence have the wrong year etc for a bunch of the pictures.
Alternative suggestions appreciated. I suppose I could put a number in front
of them while naming them? But that seems like a tedious process!
