T&T: galley gadgets

Hi Robin, I'm with you, I like cooking on the boat better than at home. I
have a beautiful kitchen at home too.
Somehow though, I seem to have moved all my good tools and gadgets to the
boat, (full-timers in the Bahamas Nov. - June), along with all the spices and
special ingredients, etc. I haven't taken the bread maker mainly because I
have only made one loaf of bread in it. I had a DAK which I loved, but it got
knocked off my counter and they had been discontinued. The new one just isn't
as good and it's big! What do you have? Would it really be worth buying a
new one? We have found rye with seeds hard to find in the Bahamas this year.
I have never made rye bread though.
I reprinted my lost Mantra Pressure cooker instructions, but when I tried to
make split pea soup it didn't seem to ever get a seal. I only ever used the
old fashioned kind years ago on jams and tomatoes.
My husband agreed with the person who said the main gadget was "having a mate
on board who knows how to use the gadgets".

We're full-time liveaboards with a large battery bank, inverter, and genset
- which probably influences my preferences in gadgets, though some of my
favorites are "manual".
   - Sharp high-quality knives and whetstone
   - wooden citrus juicer (we use a lot of lemons and limes!)
   - pressure cookers - 8 qt. and 4 qt. a pressure cooker is a cruiser's
"microwave" - it's very fast and easy. I use the big one for ribs (25 mins at
pressure), risotto (8 mins), corned beef (70 mins)... the little one is great
for garlic mashed potatoes, etc. (5 mins). Saves propane, saves time.
   - Callaway stainless pot & pan set: uses clamp-on handles, has thick copper
on the bottoms, comes with pot covers and plastic lids
   - George Foreman grill - I have the small one, perfect for bad-weather days
or when in the marina
   - Cuisinart combo food-processor and blender (with a heavy glass blender
jar)
   - bread machine
   - coffee maker (though I keep a french press handy in case we have a power
crisis)
   - hi-temp silicone pans and strainer/colander

I find that I cook much more than when we lived on dirt, and I love to cook
at anchor or explore the cookbook collection on rainy days.
