Sounds like a "down burst" to me.  They are caused by a pocket of cold
heavier air at a higer altitude, that suddenly becomes unstable,
creates a hole in the warmer air below and funnels its way downward.
That is why the effects are localized and short lived.  Sounds like
you found a big one.
