Look very carefully at the Lowrance units.  They have both Nautipath marine
and topo maps available.  I just purchased a unit with 20 gig hard drive,
which has both Marine, topo, lakes, and the ability to use Navionics maps when
necessary.

I have used a Lowrance for 4 years with "Create a map", topo's, plus Navionics
marine on SD/MNC cards.  This worked very well in the boats and RV/as well as
cars.

This is one of the few units which has all of these features--plus MNEA 2000
bus system for fuel flow and all sorts of other features.  Also they have
partnered with Simrad for autopilots and have a radar, as well as depth
sounder if you wish.
