T&T: Ships Log

I have received a number of emails with the same advice Al offered. I
understand the logic behind this rule/requirement but expect it pre-dates
computers and electronic navigation.

It would seem to me that if one printed out the log and had to person making
the entry sign it with a sentence or two stating that it is a true copy it
would be accepted by the courts.

I'm not an attorney but know of situations where the courts approve similar
documents. Any thoughts?

Gordon:

There is no way to create a legally acceptable ship's log using a
computer.

A legal ship's log must be in a permanently bound book, written in ink,
with no erasures, and initialed or signed entry by entry.

You might want to keep your wheel log on the computer, then transfer the
data to a ship's log at your convenience.

Dear All:

Has anyone on the list developed a ships log using Excel or some other
application that they are willing to share? I have been working on one,
but not wanting to re-invent the wheel, thought I would ask.

I have searched the internet and found a number of printed versions and
some that can be purchased on CD, but nothing that can be downloaded.

We are about to leave Hong Kong (on our new trawler) on a voyage that
will take us to the US via the Indian Ocean, Med and Atlantic. I have a
log book that I used on my sailboat, but it is not applicable to a motor
vessel.
