I have used tubular aluminum--either tied a rolling hitch around the "balance
point or welded on a plate, and put shakle holes in the plate. One or two
lines to the bow, and one line to each side of the transom.  Aluminum is
lighter, stronger and stiffer than wood in this application.  You can use an
"I" beam if you wish.
