T&T: Electric fuel pumps

Hi, Brian:

This is a great setup, and you don't need a fancy or expensive pump for it.
Go to NAPA (my preference) or your favorite auto parts store and get the
largest pump they sell, (one meant for gasoline is fine). This should have 5/16"
or 3/8" connections. Install it between the tank and the Racor. Not knowing
what size engine you have, I can't comment what effect this will have on your
engine's requirements, but my sailboat's 85HP 4-236 has had this setup for 15
years. The engine's lift pump simply pulls the fuel through the electric, a
lift of about 5 feet, max, in my case. Your filter vacuum gauge should tell
the story--my setup has practically no restriction. If you want to bypass
around the main fuel line, you could put a check valve in the main line but I'd
opt for a single ball valve unless you want true isolation, in which case, use
two.

Regards,
