T&T: Electric fuel pumps

This has probably been discussed before, but here goes again. I plan to
install an electric fuel pump on my DeFever 41 with a single John Deere engine. My
only reason is to aid in fuel filter replacement, and I do not plan to have it
running except when it is needed for filling / bleeding the filters Where
should it go, and where can it go? On my previous sail boat, I installed it
between the Racor and the engine filter. It seemed to work fine for many years, but
I was warned many times that the vacuum required to pull the fuel through the
valve on the electric pump would ruin my lift pump. (sort of like 2 micron
filters ruining the lift pump, per the John Deere training Engineer). I can see
that pushing might be better than pulling, so putting it before any filters
may be best. Others have suggested putting in a "Y" or "T" with valves and only
having it in the circuit and running when priming the filters. So, what's the
experience of the group.
Thanks
Brian.
