T&T: The case for following manufacturers recommendation: was 2 vs 10 micron filters

Yes the manufacturers have the staged filter recommendations but again based
on what criteria. Is it because typical diesel fuel has the majority of
particles in the 10 to 30 and bigger micron size and so staged filters will
thus catch the majority of particles before the 2 micron final? If the bulk of
particles were 2 micron and smaller, would any filter be necessary?
So we still have the "the manufacturer said so" camp and the "it is easier to
change a non-engine mounted filter" camp. Somewhere there must be a
manufacturers rational and test results that support the staged filter method
and that it is not based on old stationary engine history.
