It can, even if you don't want to do that troublesome DR thing. On Derreen, 
in addition to a PC-based chartplotter, I keep a handheld GPS with a 12VDC 
power cord backed up with fresh AA batteries internal to the GPS. 
Occasionally I'll take a lat/long off the GPS and mark the spot on the paper 
chart. Admittedly this method fails if the GPS system fails, but at least I 
have a sequence of marks to attempt DR.
