T&T: 12vdc Refrigerator

What does the List think of a straight 12v dc refrigerator? Our Norcold DE704
AC/DC frig will need replacement before too long. I like the option of
switching to AC when we are plugged in, but then the charger is on when we are
plugged in and the frig can continue to run off the batteries. Are there any
distinct advantages to being able to run off either AC or DC that warrant the
extra cost?
