Snip: Now I'm not saying that Garmin will go out of business. I would
strongly suggest, however, that a hardware platform based on a high-end
mobile phone or one of the newer UMPC's would be able to meet all of your
GPS requirements as well as provide much more utility both on and off the
boat. The examples are numerous. " Jeffrey Siegel

Jeff,

Thanks for the feedback.
Given the frequency with which I seem to mislay my phone I am not sure that
I want something so multi functional (and expensive) that is not tied down
to something. I guess I don't like PDA's - my Filofax seems to do all that I
need in that respect. So UMPC's may be too much of a quantum leap for me.

I certainly dislike multi functional networking on a boat preferring I am
old fashioned enough to prefer redundancy and totally independent systems. I
was delivering a sail boat the other day and its B&G autopilot wouldn't work
because the networked speed log paddle was clogged up!! An amazingly bad
design idea.

Even after the 2200 was introduced much of Wang's business was lost to HP as
I recall - they were "calculators" in those days. I had friends working for
them who lost their jobs eventually. Of course dedicated word processors
were around for a hundred years or more in the form of typewriters!

Yup I think Garmin will be around for a while.

Cheers
