In the 1980's, Wang made stand-alone word processing systems. They took
over the business world and were incredibly successful even though they only
did one function (word processing) on specialized hardware. Eventually,
more standardized, general hardware came out (IBM PC, Apple II, etc) that
could run word processing software as well as many other applications. Wang
went bankrupt.
This type of thing has been repeated over and over again as markets mature
and generalized hardware appears. The Nuvi's, TomTom specialized systems,
etc. are all examples too.
Now I'm not saying that Garmin will go out of business. I would strongly
suggest, however, that a hardware platform based on a high-end mobile phone
or one of the newer UMPC's would be able to meet all of your GPS
requirements as well as provide much more utility both on and off the boat.
The examples are numerous.
