T&T: Wiring diagram for adding inverter to DC system

it depends on the inverter you are using... does it have built in transfer
switch ? if not a rotary switch is needed or a pair of dual breaker poles
with safety slide. if the boat also has a gneset, you'll need a 3 position
rotary $witch (shore-inv-gen-off)
the alternator size depends on how much power you will use, how big the
battery bank and if you have another alternator for the boat DC loads.
i don't think it woudl be feasible or practical to fit a alternator large
enough to feed the inverter at rated power... i'd go for something big
enough to supply power for your typical needs plus some margin, and let the
battery bank handle the occasional extra load. ex... if you have an AC
fridge and a few lights, size tghe alternator to handle that plus a 25%.
If you run the microwave or a coffee maker, the extra power will come from
the batteries and once done the extra capacity on the alternator will be
used to recharge what was used.
i have a 3000W inverter and 8 golf cart batteries, but it's recharged from
shore or genset (3 to 4 hrs a day) since my cruising only involves short
runs and one to two days on the hook. If i was running for longer times,
i'd add an alternator to recharge the inverter bank but dont' need that
right now.
