T&T: Side Exhaust wet or dry

My very first boat was built in England and had side exhausts right at the
water line.
Idling at the dock it splashed and burbled but under way the bow wave elft a
depression midships so th eexhaustr was clear of the water. Very quiet,even
standing on deck directly above the outlet.
Sounds very similar to the "NorthSsas" system described by Larry Z  except
mine didn't have the cross over pipe.
That system worked perfectly for 30 years that I know of.
