I want to make a point from this question: any person who buys a boat which is
"new" to them should not attempt an open water crossing until they are very
familiar with the boat and are sure that it is in adequate condition.
Questions I asked the poster are: has the fuel been polished and tank cleaned?
Do you have multiple spare filters for adequate filters? Do you know how to
rapidly bleed the diesel engine? Do you have adequate spares, including
impellors for pumps, hoses and belts? Do you have adequate tools aboard? I
would include back up batteries, a volt meter, adequate communication gear
(does the radio work, is there an EPIRB or sat phone?) Is the life saving
gear in order.
The crossing could be a problem in ideal settings if something went wrong.
Don't tempt fate by taking a new to you boat out in rough weather, which may
potentially detiorrate.
