The problem often is that there is some movement in the plug, and with the
movement comes some arcing--and heat build up.  As the arcing occurs, carbon
is deposited and the resistance increases, and the heat increases even more.
It is important to be sure that  both ends of the cord are connected solidly
to their outlets/inlets.  This is increased resistance and heat is one of the
most common causes of electrical fires on boats.
