T&T: Cell phone coverage

I managed to get on the Verizon system about 60 miles NW of Columbia 
River the other day. That's about 45 miles offshore. The trick was to 
force the phone into Analog mode for the single call. I had been 
attempting to make a call once we got within 100 miles of the coast on 
the way in from Dutch Harbor. I could get 2 bars in Digital mode but 
could not get a call to dial out, at about 50 miles.
