T&T: Accident Reporting

Some years ago the CG suspected that they were not receiving reports on
all of the accidents that were required by law to be reported to them.
;-) At the time, I believe that was any accident involving bodily
injury, or one with property damage greater than $500.

They arranged with insurance carriers representing approximately 80% of
US boats to cross reference their claims with CG reports. The result was
predictable! They found that they were receiving the legally required
report in about 8% of the cases that should have been reported.

What's happened since then I'm not sure of, but Mike's reference is
quite possible.
