I remember seeing a great photo of these DD's on the beach. Does anyone
know where that might be?

It happened at Point Honda, aka Honda Point north of Point Arguello and just
below Point Pedernales on the California Coast near Vandenburg AFB and
Lompoc. Seven DDs all ran on the rocks and were lost. See and read about it

As I recall the story of the grounding of these four stack destroyers,
there was a new fangled radio direction finding installation on board,
and the Officer in Charge was warned that they had turned too soon on
the basis of the radio fix, but ignored the warning.
