Re: BST: Newbie needs some input from the board...
Hello All!
I have
been shopping for a possible live-aboard trawler for quite some
time now, and
amazingly have found a '84 Marine Trader 44 (fiberglass hull)
in the local
freshwater lake marina where I live. It arrived here 10 yrs
ago and has been
in the water and under cover since that time, but with little
to no
maintenance done. After having a look at the outside this weekend she
looks
to be in quite good condition other than needing a good clean up and
teak
trim restoration. What would I be looking at in terms of engine(twin
Lehmans), shafts, bottom maintenance in general for a boat that has seen only
minimal use in freshwater for this amount of time? It is being offered at an
excellent price for a vessel of its size, so I would appreciate anyones
thoughts on what I am looking at to get her into shape, and then it will run
me
about 5k to get her to the coast here in SC where I live.
With out much
more detail it's hard to put any numbers together. But take a good look at the
decks, windows and anchor bit and locker for any signs of leaks. The Lehmans
are pretty bullet proof. But you'll need to at least clean and/or replace all
the coolers. And replace hoses and clamps. Also take a good look at the
electrical systems and batteries.
Restoring the teak is a big job. And an
expensive one unless you are doing it all yourself.
What is "an excellent
price" by the way? Because once you add up all the costs of restoring and
moving it, "excellent" could rapidly become OK or not some great.
Bill
